PA Turnpike WB-224B Superstructure Replacement

Michael Kilgore

Cost: $5.48 million
Client: PA Turnpike Commission
Contact: Walter W. Wimer, P.E. (717-831-7590)
Project Letting - October 2016

This project was initially the full replacement of a bridge carrying mainline Turnpike over Brush Creek. The project modified the scope for a superstructure-only replacement project, incorporating ABC strategies. The existing superstructure is a two span non-composite adjacent box beam bridge with two lanes in each direction and relatively narrow shoulders. SPK developed final plans for a two span continuous steel superstructure which minimizes the impacts to the Turnpike traffic and utilizes the existing substructure.

Superstructure Replacement Project in Lebanon County - The existing bridge was a single span steel thru-girder bridge over two active lines of Norfolk Southern Railroad. Traffic needed to be maintained on the existing roadway so SPK studied methods to replace a thru-girder bridge in half-widths, concluding with a design for a steel girder support beam placed near the deck cut line with hangars detailed to support the severed floorbeams. The grade was being increased as well to improve the railroad underclearance.

Bridge Replacement/Rehabilitation - Bradford County -  This project was a design-build two-bridge replacement/rehabilitation project. The project included the replacement of a single span bridge carrying S.R. 0006 over Sugar Creek and the superstructure replacement of a bridge carrying S.R. 0006 over a Branch of Sugar Creek. The replacement bridge is a single-span (65.3’ span) P/S Spread Box Beam Integral Abutment Bridge. The superstructure replacement was also a single-span (32’ span) P/S Spread Box Beam Bridge constructed on modified existing abutments. SPK prepared the final construction plans, traffic control plans, and structure plans for the contractor.
